Episode 37: Business Essentials | Legal Considerations with Jay Horowitz

When I am not focusing all my attention on marketing, you can typically find me exploring other aspects of starting and running a successful business. That is why this month I am decided to explore a new series that turns from my normal content marketing education and explores some of the basic essentials each entrepreneur needs to strengthen if they want a successful and strong business. But I knew I couldn’t and shouldn’t do this alone, so I decided to reach into my network of professionals and ask if they could join me on my podcast and bring their wisdom and insight to the table.

One business essential that many entrepreneurs know is important but feel is out of their reach is good legal representation and consultation. That is why I invited my friend Jay Horowitz to the podcast.

Jay S. Horowitz has been a licensed attorney for 30 years. He counsels and advises clients regarding legal matters, including business law, wills and estate planning, immigration, bankruptcy, and trademark protection and registration. He also serves on the Olde Towne Advisory Committee for the City of Gaithersburg, Maryland. He is a member of the bars of the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. He is also admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Now, before we jump into the conversation, I want to remind you about next month’s Content Marketing Strategy Workshop. It will be an in-person half-day workshop here in Gaithersburg, Maryland happening on Wednesday, August 17 starting at 9 am. Together we will spend some time on four different key parts of content planning.

  1. How to pick your content topics for up to six months for your business
  2. Explore different types of content creation and which are best for your business
  3. How to schedule out your content to allow for maximum exposure to your audience
  4. The best ways to distribute your content and get it into the hands of those that need it the most

The workshop will give you the skills to plan your content 3-to-6 months in advance. It will teach you how to create a content marketing strategy that is aligned with your business objectives and aligns with your organization’s goals. You can learn more about the workshop and even register on our website.

Now that I have reminded you about that, let’s listen to what Jay had to share about incorporating legal support into your business strategy. Here are some of the questions that Jay and I discussed.

  • At what point in the entrepreneurial journey should someone stop and consider reaching out to a lawyer for help getting their new business started?
  • What are the top three legal matters that small business owners should get a lawyer for?
  • Are there any industries that are in more need of legal counsel than others?
  • In your opinion, what are some of the biggest misconceptions about lawyers and the support they provide to local small business owners?
  • What should business owners take into consideration when they are looking for legal support?
