Episode 54: Top Marketing Mistakes to Avoid this Holiday Season

I hope you have been enjoying the fall season. Honestly, it has grown to be my favorite season of all. When I was younger and living in Florida, I enjoyed the summertime more than any other time of the year. I could bake in the sun for hours. But now, as I am older and living in Maryland, I have the privilege of fully experiencing all four seasons, and I must admit, I have grown fond of fall. Not just the pumpkin spice everything, but the weather, the smells, the colors. It’s just peaceful and transformational. This also seems to be a time for growth, creativity, and inspiration for my business. 

Around the fall time last year, I was inspired to focus on this podcast and make it a regular part of my marketing outreach. Now that I am 54 episodes into this show, I can say that this journey has been incredible. Starting the Marketing 101 for Small Business Owners podcast has helped me in my own business to connect with people in my community and grow as an entrepreneur. 

For the past two weeks, I spoke on some of the recommended holiday marking campaigns to try this season and some of the trends to look out for. Today I want to go in the opposite direction and talk about some holiday trends we should avoid if we want to be successful this season.

Here is a summary of what I share during today’s podcast episode.

1. During the Holiday Season, Don’t Be Too Promotional with your Marketing.

During the holiday season, it can be tempting to promote your product or service heavily. However, this might not be the best idea. There are a few reasons why you should avoid being too promotional with your marketing during this time of year:

  1. Holiday shoppers are more likely to be focused on the experiences rather than the products.
  2. There is a higher chance of the customer being disappointed in their purchase due to gift-giving expectations.
  3. People are more likely to spend money on holiday bonuses and gifts during the holiday season, so they will not have as much left for their business.
  4. The holidays can make people feel more charitable and generous, so they may want to donate money instead of buying something for themselves or others.

2. If you sell productions or services around the nation or the world, be careful about the Time Zones

In the digital age, knowing your customers’ time zone is essential. If you sell productions or services around the nation or the world, be careful about the Time Zones. Here is an example of what I mean by that. A business that sells productions or services around the nation or world should consider time zones when they post their content to social media.

3. This Holiday Season, be careful not to market Too Much of One Thing.

This holiday season, be careful not to market too much of one thing. Marketing experts recommend that you offer a variety of items to keep customers from getting bored and to avoid over-marketing any single entity.

And the number one mistake for any small business owner to make this holiday season regarding their marketing strategy is to do NOTHING. To not plan or promote their business to the audience and miss out on the potential holiday earnings.
