Business Essentials: Establishing Strong Public Relations

A Deep Dive into Public Relations for New Small Businesses

This month I am decided to embark on a series that deviates from normal content marketing education, I wanted to explore some of the basic essentials each entrepreneur needs to strengthen if they want a successful and strong business. Now, because my focus and expertise are in marketing, I decided to reach into my network of professionals and ask if they could join me on my podcast and bring their wisdom and insight to the table.

Today’s special guest is Kimberly Hodges of Provision PR & Events. Kimberly is the head “creative and chief” of Provision Pr & Events (ProvPrE), a company that provides public outreach, strategic marketing, and event production services to government and non-profit organizations. For nearly two decades, Kimberly has supported organizations by creating national outreach campaigns and events, including conferences with over 20k attendees.

A proud resident of Montgomery County, Ms. Hodges and ProvPrE has had the privilege to produce some of the County’s most popular events such as the Montgomery Serves Awards, Bethesda Green Gala and Awards, the MLK Jr. Day of Service, and MLK Jr Tribute and Celebration, held at the historic Strathmore Music Center.

Now, before we jump into the conversation, I want to remind you about next month’s Content Marketing Strategy Workshop. It will be an in-person half-day workshop here in Gaithersburg, Maryland happening on Wednesday, August 17 starting at 9 am. Together we will spend some time on four different key parts of content planning.

  1. How to pick your content topics for up to six months for your business
  2. Explore different types of content creation and which are best for your business
  3. How to schedule out your content to allow for maximum exposure to your audience
  4. The best ways to distribute your content and get it into the hands of those that need it the most

The workshop will give you the skills to plan your content 3-to-6 months in advance. It will teach you how to create a content marketing strategy that is aligned with your business objectives and aligns with your organization’s goals. You can learn more about the workshop and even register on our workshop website

Okay enough about that, here is my conversation with Kimberly on why every brand needs to get serious about their Public Relations efforts and fast. Below are a few of the questions we explore during our conversation.

  • What are some ways you’ve helped small business owners improve their public relations?
  • What are some of the most common PR mistakes that you see small business owners make?
  • What is your go-to method for getting to know a new client and discovering their best PR needs?
  • What makes a good public relations campaign?
