Over the past two weeks, we’ve explored what Strategic Drift is and how to recognize its warning signs. But once you’ve identified that your business has gradually moved away from its intended direction, an important question remains:
How do you get it back on course?
The answer isn’t to work harder, create another strategic plan, or add more to your already full schedule.
In this week’s episode of the Clarity to CEO Podcast, we explore a different approach.
Strategic Drift is corrected by restoring alignment between where your business is going and how it operates every day.
Course Correction Begins with Clarity
One of the biggest misconceptions about course correction is that it requires starting over.
In reality, many businesses don’t need reinvention.
They need realignment.
Rather than asking, “What else should I do?” a CEO begins asking a more strategic question:
“What does the direction of this business require now?”
That shift changes how you evaluate opportunities, set priorities, and make decisions.
Instead of adding more activity, you begin reconnecting your business to its intended direction.
The Strategic Realignment Framework
In this episode, I introduce a six-step framework for beginning that course correction.
1. Reconnect
Return to the vision for the business you’re intentionally building today.
2. Evaluate
Review your offers, marketing, priorities, commitments, and opportunities against that vision.
3. Simplify
Identify the few priorities that deserve your greatest attention during this season of business.
4. Measure
Focus on evidence of meaningful strategic progress—not simply the completion of activity.
5. Lead
Pause before reacting and make decisions through the lens of your long-term strategy.
6. Revisit
Create regular strategic checkpoints to ensure your business remains aligned as it grows.
The purpose of this framework isn’t to complete a full strategic planning process in one sitting.
It’s to help you begin reconnecting your daily decisions with the business you’re intentionally building.
A Simple Strategic Realignment Exercise
As you listen to this week’s episode, take one sheet of paper and create three sections:
Where We Are Going
Write one clear statement describing the business you’re intentionally building today.
What Matters Now
Identify the three priorities that will move your business closest to that vision over the next 90 days.
What Needs to Change
List:
- One thing to stop
- One thing to simplify
- One decision you’ve been postponing
- One measure that will demonstrate meaningful progress
The goal isn’t to create another business plan.
It’s to begin restoring alignment.

It’s corrected by becoming clear about where you’re going—and making sure your daily decisions continue to move you in that direction.
