Why Following the _Right_ Business Strategy Can Still Leave You Feeling Stuck

If you’ve ever found yourself wondering why your business still feels harder than it should despite following all the right advice, you’re not alone. Many women entrepreneurs invest in courses, study proven frameworks, listen to countless podcasts, and attempt to implement the best business strategy that worked for other successful business owners. Yet even after doing everything “right,” something still feels off.

The problem often isn’t a lack of effort.

It’s that the strategy you’re following may not actually fit the person leading the business.

In this episode of the Clarity to CEO Podcast, I sat down with business mentor Marissa Liesenfelt to explore why sustainable growth begins with understanding yourself before adopting someone else’s roadmap.

Success Doesn’t Come From Copying Someone Else’s Business

One of the most valuable insights from our conversation is that successful strategies are rarely universal.

What works exceptionally well for one entrepreneur may leave another feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, or disconnected from the business they’ve worked so hard to build.

Marissa shared how her own experience leading and operating multiple eight-figure businesses eventually led her to recognize a pattern. Time and again, she watched founders experience burnout when they forced themselves into business models that looked successful but didn’t align with how they naturally worked.

Eventually, she experienced the same challenge herself.

Only after rebuilding her business around her own strengths did she begin to experience the kind of growth that also felt sustainable.

That distinction matters.

Because building a successful business shouldn’t require sacrificing the very reasons you started it in the first place.

Strategy Works Best When It’s Built Around the CEO

One idea that surfaced repeatedly throughout our conversation is that business strategy isn’t simply about choosing the right marketing tactics or sales process.

It’s about making intentional decisions that fit the leader behind the business.

Every entrepreneur brings different strengths, communication styles, decision-making preferences, and ways of connecting with clients.

When those strengths are ignored in favor of someone else’s formula, business can quickly begin to feel exhausting.

This doesn’t mean proven strategies don’t work.

It means they should be filtered through your own leadership style before they’re implemented.

As CEOs, our responsibility isn’t to adopt every new strategy we discover. It’s to evaluate whether that strategy supports the business we’re intentionally building.

Your Greatest Advantage May Already Exist

Another important part of our discussion centered around what Marissa calls your “unique edge.”

Many business owners assume they need to become more like the leaders they admire.

In reality, the opposite is often true.

The qualities that feel most natural to you are frequently the very things your clients value most.

Unfortunately, because these strengths come easily, we often underestimate them.

Instead of trying to become more like everyone else, the real opportunity is learning to recognize what already makes your approach distinctive.

When your business reflects your own expertise, experience, and perspective, marketing becomes more authentic, decision-making becomes clearer, and your business naturally becomes more difficult to compare with competitors.

Strategic Clarity Creates Better Decisions

One theme you’ll hear throughout this conversation is that awareness changes everything.

The more clearly you understand how you naturally think, lead, communicate, and serve others, the easier it becomes to evaluate new opportunities.

Rather than chasing every trend or implementing every new tactic, you begin making decisions through the lens of intentional leadership.

That’s what strategic clarity really provides.

It doesn’t eliminate change.

It helps you navigate change with confidence.

Instead of asking, “Does this strategy work?” you begin asking, “Is this strategy right for the business I’m building?”

That shift changes everything.
