Many entrepreneurs work incredibly hard to grow their businesses into the business you actually want, yet still feel as though they’re constantly reacting instead of leading. They’re busy. They’re making decisions. They’re checking off tasks. But they aren’t always confident those efforts are moving them toward the business they actually want.
That was the focus of this week’s conversation on the Clarity to CEO Podcast with Matt Andersen, CEO of Westlake Securities, bestselling author, and advisor to companies navigating significant growth and strategic transitions.
Rather than focusing solely on growing bigger, our conversation explored a more important question:
Are you intentionally building the business you actually want to own?
Growth Begins with Clarity
One of the most valuable ideas Matt shared is the concept of reverse engineering your business.
Instead of asking, “What should I do next?” he encourages business owners to first identify where they ultimately want to go. Once that destination is clear, today’s decisions become much easier to evaluate.
It’s a perspective that aligns closely with something I teach regularly: strategy begins with clarity.
Without a clear destination, every opportunity can feel important. Every new idea seems worth pursuing. Every task feels urgent.
When you know where you’re going, however, your vision becomes the filter through which you make decisions.
The Difference Between Goals and Priorities
Another important distinction from our conversation was the difference between goals and priorities.
Goals define the outcome you’re working toward.
Priorities are the activities that help move you there.
The challenge isn’t usually having too few priorities. It’s trying to treat every priority as equally urgent.
Intentional leadership requires making thoughtful decisions about what deserves your attention today and what can wait until later.
That shift allows you to move from reacting to every opportunity toward making decisions that support your long-term vision.
Why Staying Busy Isn’t the Same as Growing
Many entrepreneurs assume they’re facing a productivity problem when what they’re actually experiencing is a clarity problem.
When the destination isn’t clearly defined, it’s easy to stay occupied without making meaningful progress.
Throughout our conversation, Matt shared how successful businesses consistently return to their long-term vision, making small adjustments along the way rather than allowing daily distractions to determine their direction.
Growth becomes less about doing more and more about doing what matters most.
Leadership Requires Intentional Decisions
One of my favorite moments in this conversation came when we discussed how leadership is often less about having every answer and more about making one important decision:
Choosing that tomorrow will be different than today.
The process of building a business doesn’t change overnight.
But the commitment to leading intentionally begins with a single decision.
From there, every strategic choice becomes an opportunity to move closer to the business—and the life—you want to create.
